Dorothy J. Paul

Dorothy (Willard) Paul, aged 89, passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2012, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She was born on June 25, 1922, in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Charles and Emogene (Lindquist) Willard. She married Howard W. Paul on April 16, 1949, and he preceded her in death on November 15, 1977. She attended Northwestern University business school and during her working years was employed as a secretary at Montgomery Ward corporate headquarters in Chicago, Itasca (IL) North School, and Monsanto Envirochem, Inc., Chicago. She retired from the Northeastern Illinois Planning Commission, also in Chicago. A devoted mother, Dorothy raised two children and volunteered as a Cub Scout Den Mother and in numerous other capacities. During World War II she volunteered at the USO, and in retirement, she volunteered at Central DuPage Hospital, in Wheaton, IL. Dorothy had a talent for painting and drawing. The Dorothy Paul Visual Arts Award was established at the Hawthorn Elementary School District (Vernon Hills, IL) by her son in 2006. She had a lifelong love of Waverland Beach (Stevensville, MI) on Lake Michigan and often painted scenes from there. Dorothy resided in Itasca, Illinois, for 35 years and was a longtime member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Itasca. During retirement, she lived briefly in Austin, Texas, and then for many years in Wheaton, Illinois, before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan. Dorothy's sense of humor was a delight for all who knew her. She was predeceased in addition to her husband by her brother Charles Willard and her sister Sally (Kenneth) Swanson, both residents of Florida, and is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Willard of Ocala, Florida. Dorothy is survived by her son, Richard (Kathy) Paul of Vernon Hills, IL, and her daughter Sally (Joe) Twist, of Saline, Michigan. She also is survived by five beloved grandchildren, Joseph Twist of Saline, MI, Kimberly (Ryan) Jasper, of Milan, MI, Laurel Twist of Ann Arbor, Amanda Paul and Emily Paul, both of Vernon Hills, IL. Dorothy also is survived by four great-grandchildren, Laila, Cristin, Rebecca, and Katelyn Jasper, and by many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will take place at 3:00 P.M. on Friday, January 27, 2012, at Elm Lawn Memorial Park Chapel, 401 E. Lake Street, Elmhurst, IL, with Rev. Kwang Sung Lim of Bethany United Methodist Church, Itasca, IL, officiating. Interment will be at Elm Lawn Memorial Park.
