Alfred O. "Al" Valentine

Age 84, passed away on Monday, May 25, 2015. He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 19, 1930, in White Plains, NY, to the late Alfred and Frieda (Ohrle) Valentine. On September 5, 1953, in Philadelphia, PA, he married Elizabeth “Betty” M. Goff, of Philadelphia, PA. They were happily married for almost sixty-one years. She preceded him in death on August 10, 2014. Al graduated from New York University with a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and went on to work in management at Honeywell, Philco, Philco Ford, and Ford Motor Company, retiring in 1989. After retiring, Al and Betty spent a good portion of their retired years at their lake home, in Alpena, MI. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hunting, and camping. He especially loved salmon fishing on Lake Huron on his boat, “The Betty V,” and then preparing the catch of the day for big family meals that same night. He took great care of his garden and yard, planting and replanting trees. He enjoyed watching his green grass and trees grow while sitting on the back porch in Alpena with the love of his life, Betty. He will always be remembered for his devotion to Betty, his family, and friends. He dearly loved his grandchildren who were always a great source of pride for him, and they were loving, wonderful bright spots especially during the past several months. He was generous with his time and was always willing to lend a helping hand where needed. He is survived by his children Jan (Jamie) Roak and Mark (Ann), Jeff (Debbie), and Glenn (Marie) Valentine. Other survivors include his grandchildren Kate (Jason) Osbourn, Elizabeth (Richy) Kerry, Kevin Roak, and Grace, Eric, Andrew, Stacey, and Brian Valentine and his brother, George Peter Valentine. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 5, 2015, from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the First Presbyterian Church located at 143 E. Michigan Ave., Saline, MI. His Memorial Service at the church will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2015, at 10:30 A.M., with Rev. Jennifer Clark officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Wounded Warrior Project, PO Box 758517, Topeka, KA 66675. Envelopes will be available at the memorial service.
