Rose Mary Day Recchia

Rose Mary Day Recchia, born June 25, 1938, passed peacefully surrounded by love. A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, educator, and lifelong member of her community, she lived a life dedicated to family, faith, teaching, compassion and generosity. Rose was born to Sarah Teresa Goss Day and George William Day and was raised on her family’s farm near Willis, Michigan. She often shared memories of sitting on the fence singing to the farm animals she loved so dearly — an early reflection of the warmth and compassion that would shape her entire life. Determined to pursue higher education, Rose worked full time while attending college, paying for her education entirely on her own. She graduated from Lincoln High School in Ypsilanti in 1956 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education from Eastern Michigan University in 1961, becoming certified to teach kindergarten through 12th grade. She later earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Marygrove College. Rose devoted her professional life to teaching and was deeply proud of her career as an educator. Early in her career, she participated in a pilot program that later became Head Start, helping shape early childhood education initiatives. Over the years, she taught students across all grade levels and concluded her career teaching emotionally impaired high school students, a role that reflected her patience, empathy, and unwavering belief in every child’s potential. She shared 59 loving years of marriage with her husband, Richard Recchia, who survives her. Together they built a strong and loving family. She is lovingly remembered by her children: Monique Recchia Castria (husband Frank; daughters Caris and Vita), Raffaele Recchia, Richard Recchia, Dayna Recchia (daughter River Rose Marie), and Reigis Recchia (wife Kori; children Reagan and Reed). Rose is also survived by her sister, Barbara Day Carpenter. She was preceded in death by her siblings Joe Day, Liam Day, Marie Day Laskey, June Day Hutting, and Roger Day. A lifelong learner and adventurer, Rose Mary loved history and traveling. She visited 49 states and six continents, passing her sense of curiosity and wanderlust on to her children and grandchildren. She was a deeply giving person whose faith guided her throughout her life. Music was one of her great joys, and she participated in her church choir for many years. Rose was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, where she worshiped from birth. Her faith remained central to her life, and she will be laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery. Friends may join the family for a time of visitation on Sunday, March 22, 2026 from 9:30 A.M. to 10:30 A.M. at the Robison-Bahnmiller Funeral Home in Saline. A Rosary Service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Visitation will continue on Sunday at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ypsilanti from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M. A Mass of Catholic Burial will be take place at 2:00 P.M. with Fr. Pieter vanRooyen as Celebrant. A luncheon will take place following the Mass and will be held at a location to be determined. Graveside Services will take place on Monday, March 23 at 10:30 A.M. at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, corner of Willow Road and Whittaker Road in Milan, MI. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Rose’s name may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959, and envelopes will be available at the funeral home and the Church.
