Shirley Anne Meyers

Shirley Meyers, age 91, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 25, 2026. Shirley was born April 12, 1935 to the late Howard Myers and Anna (Fitz) Myers. On September 26, 1954 she married William E. (Bill) Meyers. Shirley is survived by her husband, Bill, daughter Betsy (Meyers) Farner and son-in-law Peter Farner, four grandchildren, Peter W. Farner, Jr., James E. Farner, Rebecca Anne (Farner) Reinersten and Mary Elizabeth (Farner) Faynik, and six great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings, Pauline, Ruth, Jack and Quentin. Shirley was a proficient medical secretary and then devoted her time as a stay-at-home mom. Shirley delighted in making trips to the “zoo” (Kalamazoo), spending 1-2 days a week with her grandchildren. She also became a volunteer for the “Friends of Michigan Medicine” – a group of volunteers that managed multiple gift shops across the Ann Arbor campuses with all proceeds funding programs to support patients and their families. Shirley spent countless hours doing needlepoint – making a variety of items including pillows, ornaments and wall hanging pieces. She also enjoyed playing bridge and golf at Golf and Outing with her ladies’ group. A special thanks to the ladies who spent time with Shirley over the last 12 months – you helped her keep her wit and spirit going. Perspective from her grandchildren - “Grandmommy” was perhaps Shirley’s most lasting legacy. When it comes to childhood magic, she was truly a magician. When the grandkids were young, she would drive to Kalamazoo (often too fast in her silver Beamer!) to visit weekly. She was a fixture in their lives, attending countless sporting events, theater productions, and school programs. Each time she came to visit, she would take one grandkid at a time out of school to go on a special lunch date– a simple act that made each kid feel like the most special child in the world. Time with Gram is best remembered playing endless games of gin rummy, being spoiled rotten by delicious baked goods and Pennsylvania Dutch-inspired meals, and by the most comforting hugs one could imagine. It wasn’t Christmas until Gram showed up with trays of cookies and candies and more gifts than Santa Clause. She was the quintessential grandmother – sweet and kind, but always ready to get into a little trouble together behind our mother’s back.
